Drawings of lions dating back 32,000 years have been found in caves. These majestic creatures have always inspired awe and fear. Living on the desert margins of Egypt, lions represented for the ancient Egyptians the sentries of the eastern and western horizons. The warrior goddess Sekhmet was the watchful eye of the sun god Ra. Lions were also associated with the sun and as such were an emblem of resurrection.

Totems can be a natural object such as an animal or plant that can represent a group of people, such as a family, clan, or tribe. Inuit tribes hoped that through wearing animal amulets on your neck would, through sympathetic magic, give them the natural attributes of these creatures.
