In some parts of the world, painting your porch a specific shade of blue is said to protect you from spirits or 'Haint' entering the home. This tradition originated from the Gullah Geechee people (descendants of enslaved Africans) in the Southern US and from the belief that evil spirits can’t cross water. The colour 'Haint' is now a specific shade of light blue-green and the origin of the word 'haunt'. This colour is still painted on doors and shutters in some regions believed to prevent unwanted spirits from haunting your home.

Inuit tribes hoped that through wearing animal amulets on your neck would, through sympathetic magic, give them the natural attributes of these creatures.
